Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying such medications should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
