Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
